The much-talked about abortive Kumasi homecoming concert for Daddy Lumba (DL), which failed to come off on Boxing Day, December 25 finally took off on New Year’s Day to relief of the music superstar and his fans. The show had to be called off due to a poor technical setup and rescheduled for January 1 2011. However the show would not go without another controversy, as there was a fire outbreak bringing the event to a halt minutes after the music icon mounted the stage.

According to reports from Kumasi, the show which had been characterized with so much hype and controversy surprisingly saw an increase in turn out, with religious Lumba fans trooping to the premises of Royal Lamerta Hotel, venue for the event.  Kwabena Agyeman-Kobia, Event Publicist, claims that the show which had already been sold out, witnessed an overwhelming patronage as supplementary tickets meant for first time entrants also run out of stock.

In spite of the earlier backlash at the artiste and the event organizers, including threats of legal action, the night turned out to be one of glitz and glamour as everything finally went according to plan. As expected, there was an increase in security presence around the vicinity but that didn’t intimidate patrons from singing and dancing along to some of the most cherished hits of the unrelenting music star.

Kwabena Agyeman-Kobia commented: “Daddy Lumba, a chap believed to be the most commercially viable music brand in Ghana, once again justified his popularity and was excellent on the night with a scintillating performance that turned patrons on. ”
