Meet the first Somali-American Muslim woman who won in US midterm elections

Ilhan Omar has become the first Muslim woman to be elected to United States Congress after yesterday’s midterm elections.

Omar was born in on October 4, 1981, in Mogadishu and was raised in Baydhabo, Somalia. She moved to the US at the age of 14 after fleeing civil war in Somalia, she campaigned on a similarly progressive platform, which calls for universal healthcare and tuition-free colleges.

Her political life began attending local Democratic Farmer Labor party caucuses with her grandfather after arriving in the US.

The mother of three is the Director of Policy and Initiatives of the Women Organizing Women Network which advocates for women from East Africa to take on civic and political leadership roles.
