MultiChoice Africa – European World Cup qualifiers preview, 24-31 March 2021
SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to action from the European World Cup qualifiers, running from Wednesday 24 to Wednesday 31 March 2021.
SuperSport is your #HomeOfFootball and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Beautiful Game’.
The action starts on the evening of Wednesday 24 March, featuring current European champions Portugal taking on Azerbaijan as one of eight matches live on your Channel of Champions. This also includes reigning World Cup champions France at home to the Ukraine, with Les Bleus hoping to repeat the 7-1 thrashing they gave the Eastern Europeans when the teams met in October last year.
France manager Didier Deschamps has come out in support of star forward Antoine Griezmann, insisting that the 30-year-old’s place in the national squad is not under threat despite his stuttering form at club level with Barcelona.
“He [Griezmann] may not be going through his best moment, but that does not question his level,” Deschamps explained. “It would be indecent to question his presence in the national team. In November, Paul Pogba was going through an even more difficult period with Manchester United. Being with us gave him a boost and he was great against Portugal. Antoine’s case is the same, it’s a matter of trust.”
The pick of games on Thursday 25 March sees Germany at home to Iceland, with Derr Mannschaft beginning the countdown to a new era, as long-serving coach Joachim Low has announced that he will be stepping away from the role at the end of the European Championships later this year.
“I have had great triumphs with them and painful defeats, but above all many wonderful and magical moments – not just winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. I am and will remain grateful to the DFB [Germany FA], which has always provided me and the team with an ideal working environment,” said Low.
The top match from Saturday 27 March is a heavyweight battle between Serbia and Portugal, while Belgium will also have a tough game away to the Czech Republic and the always-entertaining Netherlands will back themselves to beat Latvia in Amsterdam.
Sunday 28 March is headlined by Italy facing Bulgaria in Sofia, with manager Roberto Mancini hoping to continue his revolution of the Azzurri: “It will be important to start [the qualifiers] well, the games will be played to the maximum. It will be difficult because we have two away games. The moment of the boys is good enough, the fact is that they play a lot. I believe there is a great responsibility on our part, I hope it is a new beginning for Italy,” said the former Manchester City boss.
The qualifiers continue through the midweek of Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 March, with headline matches including Wales at home to the Czech Republic, Russia away to Slovakia and England welcoming Poland to Wembley Stadium in London.
Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate says he is excited to see young creative players getting their chance in the Premier League – with the result being he is spoilt for choice when it comes to the national team.
“But what’s really exciting is that for years we’ve talked about development in English football and where are the creative players, how do we develop those types of players,” said Southgate. “We’ve had root and branch reviews of everything from, you know, grass-roots football to academy football to everything for decades and we’ve now (got them).”
