New And Unverified Users on Twitter To Pay $1 annual Subscription Fee
In a bid to tackle misinformation, spam, and enhance user experience, popular social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter has today October 18, 2023 announced the introduction of a nominal annual subscription fee of $1 for new and unverified users.
According to the company, the new programme has started in New Zealand and the Philippines and existing users won’t be affected. This was made known in a statement shared on the support account of the Elon Musk owned social media platform today, October 18.
The statement noted that users will get to post content, like, repost, reply, bookmark, and quote posts for paying the fee as well as new free users will just get a read-only account to look at posts and follow accounts. It further clarified that the program is not a profit driver. Instead the company explained this program will help it reduce spam.
“Starting today, we’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected.”
“This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount. It is not a profit driver,” the statement read.
