According to history, Africa has been pinpointed as the origin of civilization that in many cases should have placed the continent above the rest in terms of growth, development and peace, however, only a handful of these aforementioned signs of progress have been realized by every single country in the continent. While a section of the continent has been seen peace and growth, other parts are struggling to even maintain one of such progress. This has largely been blamed on the different hands which have ruled the continent or which allowed the continent to be ruled through them. The world at large has depended on history from even before civilization to write and re-write, and correct certain mistakes to avoid repetition and provide the avenue for an optimistic future, and that’s based on the different leaders and collective effort of citizens to build nations and continents.

However, almost every African leader that seems to create the continent, Africans are dreaming of is either dethroned, imprisoned or perish during the struggle for the growth of their respective countries. Unfortunately, the lists of such visionary leaders whose lives have been cut short are endless, Dr Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, according to accounts left behind and documented for reference sake, fought for independence for Ghana, became president but his main vision was to unite Africa under one umbrella to achieve the United States Of Africa, sadly, he couldn’t live long enough to realize that dream which he started for the continent. Thomas Sankara of Burkina was a key figure in the pan African movement, carrying the torch of African unity to a greater height but starting from his country, he was assassinated just at the age of thirty-seven after taking the high office in the country through a coup and championing a revolutionary trend to place the country on a new path. Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Kofi Annan – who served two terms as the secretary-general of the United Nations – and many other leaders. These leaders had one thing in common, fighting for the good of the continent, most of using the knowledge they have occurred from their educational experience outside Africa. But, some of them had their lives cut short while others were either overthrown from office or didn’t realize their visions for the continent.

One of the fastest rising African authors demonstrating enough library firepower, Stacy Maweunam Amewoyi acknowledged the determination and documented their lives and works for the continent in the second instalment – “Rising Stars” – of her forthcoming novel “Africa And The African,” a four-part novel that highlights the achievements, mistakes and downfall of some of the greatest leaders in the history of Africa. The bit and pieces of inspiration that can be drawn from these leaders for the continent to move into a space everyone will be proud of. After the success of her critically acclaimed novel – “Missing Fathers” – and other books, she has taken her research on the history of the continent to a promising height in other to tap Africans on the shoulder as a reminder that the continent can only move forward with collective effort but not forgetting the history and legacy left behind by some of the aforementioned leaders that have struggled to get different countries within the continent to a state of freedom. Nelson Mandela had to sacrifice almost a large portion of his life in prison to get his voice across that unity deprived of race shouldn’t be tolerated in his country (South Africa), a sacrifice that had a huge impact on the continent, he received resounding applauds from almost everyone but has his message been carried on by nations. He fought for unity but there’s still Africans fighting Africans because of land, ethnic background, and several other reasons.

The works and legacy left behind are being carried on by a couple of leaders like Paul Kagame, whose name is constantly on the lips of Africans for the impact he has made in Rwanda since taken over as the leader of the country. Taking the country from a war zone to a major tourist destination on the continent, this mostly is being tagged as the “Dubai of Africa,” a good name for the country. Though he has been criticized a lot for allegedly suppressing press freedom, not creating the environment for other political leaders to stand against him and many other things, the citizens keep voting for him to continue his work as the leader.

In the “Africa And The African” novel, Stacy Maweunam Amewoyi visited events of the past and present to ask Africans to not let go of the leaders that are trying everything possible to make Africa the land of possibilities and Paul Kagame’s name and other leaders of this generation are reigning so well in her conversation. The good must be celebrated enough for others to emulate their works, let’s not hail them only after their death. The author suggests in the novels that why won’t the entire continent take a leaf from the playbooks of these leaders that are being praised highly for working for the development of the continent to affect the lives of the younger generation and empower them to have a sense of belief in the continent rather than taking the other turn. Part of the novel also discourages the fact of allowing African history to be told by non-Africans; the history of the continent must be written and documented by Africans. “Africa And The African” novel is truly a must-read, that affects the way you view the continent and the role you can play to make it a better place.
