Actors with Golden Tulip ManagementFor the second year running, the ‘ Iron ladies’ of Ghanaian cinema, Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong-Manso have received the most number of nominations in the Ghana Movie Awards for their works.

Unlike last year when both entered two separate movies for the awards,  two of Shirley’s movies namely ‘6 Hours to Christmas’ and ‘Adams’ Apples’ were nominated this year  while Leila’s upcoming movie,  ‘Ties The Bind’ got her the nominations this time around.  The two film makers are however expected to have some competition from the award winning war flick, ‘Somewhere in Africa’, which follows them closely in terms of nominations.

There was also a surprise nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role (English) category for Hollywood star actress, Kimberly Elise and Nollywood’s Omotola Jalade Ekeinde ahead of their Ghanaian co-star in ‘Ties That Bind’, Ama K Abebrese. Ama K was nominated in the Best Discovery category instead.  It seems Ama was made for Ghana Movie Awards controversy as she was initially announced for Best Discovery the previous year for her role in the award winning ‘Sinking Sands’, due to an error. In a subsequent communication from the organizers of the awards, Ama’s name was withdrawn from that category leaving her only in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, which was won jointly by Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Okoro, Juliet Ibrahim and Roselyn  Ngissah.

The nominations for the 2011 Ghana Movie Awards were announced during a nominees’ party at the Golden Tulip, Kumasi. Here is the full list of nominations:
