State-assisted burial to be held for Ama Ata Aidoo in mid-July

The literary world mourns the loss of one of Africa’s most celebrated authors, Ama Ata Aidoo, who passed away on May 31, 2023, at the age of 81.

To honor her remarkable contributions to literature and her impact on the African Literary landscape, the government has announced a state-assisted burial for the revered writer.

This was announced by her family when they called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House to officially inform him of her death and burial arrangements, a report by 3news.com has said.

Speaking during the meeting, the President of Ghana, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo asserted that, “I am happy that the arrangements you have made for her funeral will allow me to attend the laying-in-state.”

He continued by saying, “Even before you came here, I had made the decision that she should be given a state-assisted burial. She deserves it, and it will give myself and the people of Ghana the opportunity to pay our last respects. ”
The state- assisted burial, scheduled to take place in mid-July, aims to pay tribute to Aidoo’s immense literary legacy and her influential role in promoting African Literature globally.
