The abuse on social media is too much; Gov’t must implement stricter laws against cyberbullying – Mzbel
Ghanaian singer and entrepreneur, Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, professionally known as Mzbel has recently voiced her concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of cyberbullying and the misuse of social media platforms in Ghana.
According to the ’16 years’ hitmaker, social media is increasingly being utilized for negative purposes, such as character defamation and the dissemination of falsehoods.
She criticized various online publications for their tendency to publish unverified information in pursuit of attracting clicks.
“I feel like a lot of people are taking advantage of social media to do wrong things. We are abusing social media. Irrespective of the calibre of people, netizens will find a way to disrespect someone…Social media has become like a weapon,” she bemoaned.
Speaking about her own encounters in an exclusive interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Mzbel revealed that she has previously initiated legal action against certain bloggers and media personnel on same issue, although these matters were kept confidential due to their sensitive nature.
“I’ve used some media people before and taken a couple of people on, but it was not made public. They have learned their lessons and have repented. One is a journalist, and the rest are bloggers,” she said.
The renowned crooner further urged the government to implement stricter laws against cyber bullying.
