Why a Course in Nutrition Could Be for You

Published

Proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are associated with longevity, and one cannot exist without the other. Although exercise is an important component of the equation, you cannot ‘out exercise’ a bad diet, which makes having a balanced diet crucial in everyday life.

Nutrition is so much more than simply following the food pyramid (although this is a good place to start) and trying to eat everything in moderation. Nutrition is the study of nutrients, how to use them best, and what they accomplish in the body.

Diet and nutrition are essential and is focused on in school curriculums to help children make better and healthier life choices. While a child is growing, nutrition is extremely essential to their growth and development at a cellular level and can prevent chronic diseases or ailments occurring in adulthood.

If you need to study nutrition or want to advance your career in health, it is important to choose an education provider that is well-known and accredited to offer proper courses in nutrition.

Why Study Nutrition?

The demand for nutritionists has risen in recent years due to the rise in diet related illnesses, obesity and weight-gain. Awareness in better health and fitness has also become very popular and the need for proper nutrition goes together with the fit lifestyle.

Perhaps you want to upskill yourself within your company, or you want to kickstart your career in nutrition professionally. Either way, learning about nutrition can provide the education and skills needed in any field related to diet, health, fitness or the production of food. Understanding the link between nutrition, diet and the human body is of utmost importance to the medical, education, research, food science and technology sectors.

If you are searching for nutrition courses in the UK, you can compare some different options on findcourses.co.uk is a search engine that lists courses from top providers.

Training providers list their online courses on the search engine to professionals who want to upskill themselves and improve on their professional development.

Nutritionists Versus Dieticians

Nutritionists who are registered dieticians assist many people with various issues that require a specific diet to either help them lose weight or with tailored diets for chronic diseases such as diabetes or cancer.

Studying nutrition is the first stepping stone if you are planning on become a registered dietician. To be a registered dietician, you need to study nutrition and dietetics through an accredited university and attains a license to practise.

Essentially, the difference between a nutritionist and a registered dietician is that the latter obtains a degree and is usually required to complete an internship.

Most nutritionists work in the food technology and science sectors whilst most dieticians work in the healthcare, education and research sectors. There is often an overlap of the sectors which means that positions for both nutritionists and dieticians are in high demand. The pressure on agriculture to provide more food for growing populations also open up doors for nutritionists to work with large industries and thrive within their positions.

The Study of Nutrition

In science, the study of nutrition describes the relationship between consuming food and what the food is utilised for within the human body. As nutrition assists organisms to stay alive, it is important to study the way food affects the body at a cellular level.

Nutrition also examines how diseases, ailments and health are affected by food. There is a very close link between health and correct nutrition. Food allergies and intolerances are also studied within the nutrition field to better understand the processes and build diets specific to people who suffer from allergies or intolerances.

Malnutrition or Undernutrition

Malnutrition or undernutrition is the lack of, or unbalanced amounts of nutrients in poor diets. Malnutrition affects many people across the globe and nutritionists often assist in creating diets that can help or maintain good nutrition.

Globally, malnutrition is often the lack of food, such as in poor or war-torn countries, but malnutrition can also be found among people who have access to good and healthy diets. Eating disorders or diseases that affect the absorption of nutrients are also seen as malnutrition.

Poor diets lead to malnutrition and certain vitamin deficiencies can occur if a balanced diet is not maintained. People who do not consume vitamin C will suffer from scurvy whilst people who do not consume enough iron will be anaemic.

Dieticians and nutritionists can identify the specific dietary requirements that malnourished or undernourished people require and can assist them with a proper diet to improve their health and conditions.

The Study of Nutrients

Nutritionists will also study the pillars of nutrition; namely proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, water and fibre. These food sources can be further broken down into micro and macronutrients.  Nutritionists will study micro and macronutrients in their courses as a nutrient is the basic component of food and proper nourishment.

Macronutrients are further divided into those that provide energy and those that do not. Macronutrients are needed in bigger quantities as opposed to micronutrients (the description is in the name).

Preventing and Treating Ailments and Diseases

It is estimated that over the next decade, the demand for nutritionists will increase as the importance of preventing and treating diseases – such as diabetes – becomes critical. Type 2 diabetes specifically needs to be worked out for patients with this disease as their bodies do not produce insulin to break down the carbohydrates they consume. Therefore, portion control and complex carbohydrates added to their diets need to be carefully moderated.

Many people suffer from hormonal imbalances, digestive issues or obesity, and need proper nutrition guidelines and menus to help treat their ailments. Nutrition is also important for people who have immune deficiencies or are immunocompromised. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, for example, need a proper balanced and nutritious diet to assist their immune systems after treatment.

Nutritionists are also needed in the sports and animal-nutrition fields. Food manufacturers will also employ nutritionists in order to provide their clients with the best nutrition-dense products available. The health and wellbeing of not only humans, but animals, have become a lucrative industry with the aim of always innovating and improving on diet and nutrition. Only the best will suffice, and the services of a nutritionist will always be in demand.

People who opt to not include animal products in their diets often struggle to eat a healthy and balanced diet and need assistance. Vegetarians and vegans often need the services of a nutritionist to ensure that they are ingesting the appropriate amount of nutrients to remain healthy.

Even the media conglomerates require the services of a nutritionist with articles that appear in magazines or online pertaining to health and diet. Recipes will require a nutritionist to oversee the articles to ensure that nutrients are included and balanced.

With so many industries needing the guidance of either nutritionists or dieticians, choosing to study nutrition can be a gratifying and interesting career choice. If you only need to do a course on nutrition to add value to your current employer, it is just as interesting and beneficial.
