Learn about applications of lost wax casting

Published

wax casting

Lost wax casting is simply a process you can use to create parts, from simple to complex in various metals like silver, gold, bronze, and brass by casting original models. This process is regarded as one of the oldest popular metal-forming methods that date back decades ago.

In most cases, the lost wax casting is utilized for producing dentistry, jewelry, and many more. In industries, the lost wax casting is commonly used to make precision metal parts in manufacturing and engineering. In this post, you will learn about applications of lost wax casting.

Jewelry

One of the ways lost wax casting was previously used was to make jewelry and fine ornaments. Remember that wax patterns for complex jewelry can be hard to produce by hand. And, it can be challenging to keep pace with the hand-crafted pieces, especially when there is high demand.

The good news is that advanced materials, affordable in-house 3D printers, and digital designs are now changing how jewelry manufacturers and designers work when it comes to concept, prototyping, and producing. Today, jewelry designers can utilize jewelry CAD software to design jewelry pieces to make it easier to make and fit complex geometries that used to require many hours of precise work to carve from wax.

Besides, affordable desktop 3D printers are now creating patterns quickly that you can cast like traditional wax. It’s worth noting that 3D printing provides an almost unlimited range for geometric design creativity. Because of a precisely controlled laser, you can capture design details, raised text, and pave stone settings with incredible sharpness. If you are interested in lost wax casting, then it’s a good idea to check casting services here.

Dentistry

Lost wax casting as well as pressing restorations have been a common practice in dentistry for many years to fabricate inlays, onlays, ceramic-alloy crowns, crowns, and many other implant restorations.

You need to remember that wax patterns can be traditionally made by hand using a working die of a tooth or even an arch model that is based on manual impressions from the patients. Then the patterns can be spread to trees and burned out after the traditional lost wax casting process.

With the coming of digital technologies, a dentist can collect the anatomy of a patient digitally utilizing an intraoral scanner or an impression utilizing a desktop scanner, or even lab scanning a physical model. The scan can be taken into CAD software for the dental technician to design the desired restorations. You should remember that the patterns may then be 3D printed from a wax-like material, and choose to press or cast utilizing the traditional workflow.

Digital design in dentistry tends not to be a limitation because the anatomy of the patient usually comes from an impression. Even better, dental CAD software tools can make the design process quite simple, and 3D printing also automates the manufacturing process of these patterns that traditionally need a qualified and experienced technician and several manual steps.

No doubt, lost wax casting and digital technologies combine the best digital and analog worlds to empower dental labs to give accurate patterns, reliable and consistent digital workflow, and easy-to-use tools.
