Inspired by the 2019 success of the ‘Year of Return’, 2020 turns the page to an exciting new chapter, ‘Beyond the Return’ and the Arts are set to follow in suit. The Accra Art Fair (AAF) will begin the year’s schedule, at Untamed Empire, in partnership with the Gertrude Foundation, with a showing on March 13th for various stakeholders in efforts to build a sustainable art ecosystem in Ghana and public showings displaying some of the best of Ghanaian Art on March 14th and 15th. Curation for the show is by Esse Dabla, the Cultural Producer and Curator of Kuenyahia Trust for Contemporary Art. The general admission is from noon to 7pm on March 14th and 15th; it will be free of charge, and it is open to all.

2019 was a great year for Ghanaian artists. Our country’s first-ever Venice Biennale drew rave reviews this year and the much-celebrated Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye is back transforming a 17th-century castle into a world-class museum.

Christoph Fitih from Gertrude Foundation (GF) stated, “International fairs act as a crucial platform for galleries and artists to make their presence known, sell their works and forge links with the art industry’s major players, which is what AAF is striving to achieve. GF is an independent non-profit organization established to champion local art as an economic driver and deepen knowledge and pride in art from Africa and the diaspora. This new initiative will be instrumental in transforming our city into a global destination for art in the region and we are delighted to be a part of it.”

Now, Accra Art Fair is showcasing the best of Ghanaian art with the vision of changing and owning our narrative. Our stories, our beliefs; sculpted, painted, and written by us. Our most precious gift to ourselves and the world, our art.

Sefa Gohoho Boatin of Untamed Empire said “Untamed Empire Creative Business Incubator, is pleased to be part of the Accra Art fair to elevate Ghanaian Art. We welcome more private sector partners to join us, so we can together grow this into one of West Africa’s premier art fairs. The Arts are a fundamental component of a healthy community. We’ve launched this fair primarily to contribute value to the cultural, aesthetic and economic vitality of Ghana. We look forward to hosting the first International fair, which will bring galleries, art collectors and enthusiasts from all over the world to Ghana to see, buy and sell an enormous amount of art.”

“The contemporary African art market is growing and artists from the continent are revered worldwide. Accra Art Fair, an international art fair will add another layer to this market and will give more added visibility to the strength and depth of the art of artists in the continent. Ghana has produced some of the greatest artists in Africa so Accra is an ideal location to continue this tradition. It is also an opportunity for galleries to show all the established and new talent from Africa/the continent,” stated Sefa Gohoho Boatin of Untamed Empire.
