Africa on The Rise: Bond Girl, Naomie Harris wears dress by Ghanaian designer to the Oscars

Naomie Harris at oscarsBond Girl, Naomie Harris, attended the 2013 Oscars in a dress made by Ghana-born  fashion, student Michael Badger. The screen siren played Miss Moneypenny alongside Daniel Craig in the movie that was nominated for five awards. The dress itself was always going to make headlines after it was announced it had been made from recycled materials.

Michael Badger won a competition to create the outfit and was mentored by Vivienne Westwood. The golden outfit was made from organic silk crepe de chine with recycled zippers.The bodice featured vintage glass beads and old chocolate wrappers and the design was said to be inspired by volcanos and lava.

Michael Badger was not the only African to make the continent proud on the night. Zimbabwean UCLA student, Tatenda Mbudzi had his dream come true when he invited on stage by Academy President, Hawk Koch for a chance to deliver Oscar statuettes to ceremony presenters at the Academy Awards on Sunday. Mbudzi was one of six winners of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and MTVu’s inaugural Oscar Experience College Search, a contest announced by this year’s show host, Seth MacFarlane.
