Maradona Adjei Yeboah, better known as Guru, a Ghanaian musician running for SRC President at the University of Ghana, has confirmed his affiliation with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite his support for the Flagbearer of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the crooner made it clear that his SRC campaign is independent of the party’s influence.

In his words, “I’m a member of NPP, and I support Bawumia’s ideas, but they have no hand in my SRC ambition. The students don’t like mixing mainstream politics with school politics. I am solely sponsoring my campaign,” he said.

Speaking on Adom FM’S Dwaso Nsem on Monday, September 16, 2024, the ‘Pooley Swag’ singer  discussed the main issues he aims to address if elected. These include improving accommodation, transportation, and securing free data for online classes.

“Accommodation is a problem; 60 percent of students come from home, and transportation is challenging because of the current economic difficulties,” he noted.

Guru also plans to introduce a policy for at least one sick bay in each hall of residence, emphasizing his focus on student welfare.

“I’ll tackle accommodation, transport, sick bay, and data issues when I become the UG SRC President,” he promised.

Following a legal dispute after his disqualification by the SRC, because he did not meet the criteria to contest, the Appeals Board unanimously ruled in his favour, clearing him and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah to contest.

The Board directed that the balloting for all vetted candidates be conducted on Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

In response to his reinstatement, Guru expressed his satisfaction with the board’s decision.

“They will do that to frustrate you, but I won’t allow that. I appreciate the school and executives after I placed the injunction on the elections, and I was allowed to contest,” he said.
