A growing number of celebrities have joined the #FreetheCitizens campaign on social media, particularly on X (formally known as Twitter), to call for the release of individuals arrested during the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

The campaign aims to address what many consider a violation of human rights following the arrest of some protesters.

It will be recalled  that the arrests took place during a three-day protest at the 37 Roundabout, where demonstrators raised concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement. On Sunday, September 22, 2024 tensions escalated as a major confrontation broke out between the Democracy Hub protesters and the Ghana Police Service on the second day of the demonstration.

However, the campaign gained traction after the Accra Circuit Court, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, charged the demonstrators with conspiracy to commit a crime, namely unlawful assembly. Social media platforms erupted in outrage, with advocates condemning the treatment of those detained, particularly after a court decision to keep them on remand for two weeks without bail.

Celebrities such Ama K Abeberese, Berla Mundi , Saddick Adams, Efya, Lydia Forson, Kojo Manuel, KalyJay, Sister Deborah, Kojo Cue, Gyakie, Ameyaw Debrah, Kelvynboy, Wode Maya and Mista Meister have taken to their platforms to demand justice and accountability. Others including Kofi Kinaata, Arathejay, Bridget Otoo and Black Volta amongst others are seeking  social justice, highlighting the ill-treatment faced by the protesters, which reportedly includes lack of access to food, water, family, and legal representation.

The involvement of these influential figures has brought more attention to the #FreetheCitizens campaign, sparking conversations about democracy, governance, and human rights. With the support of celebrities, the campaign continues to grow, advocating for freedom, justice, and the protection of citizens worldwide.
