Multi-Platinum Producer Helluva Recruits Veeze & GMO Stax For “No Membership”

Published

on

Helluva, the producer responsible for soundtracking Detroit’s rap renaissance as well as hits for Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Yachty, and Kodak Black, is stepping out with a new single, “No Membership.” The trunk-rattling song features two of the Motor City’s brightest voices, Veeze and GMO Stax. Veeze is a rising-star in the Detroit scene most notable for his track “Law N Order”—a flip of the iconic theme song from the hit T.V. show “Law and Order”.

Over a Helluva beat built out of hard drums, captivating keys, and bright synth accents, the two rappers rap their realities—surviving the perils of life in the street. Veeze raps about how he sees Stax as a twin as the two artists trade bars on how they belong to a street society that does not offer membership cards.

A native of Southwest Detroit, Helluva has produced the city’s breakout stars, including Tee Grizzley, 42 Dugg, Sada Baby, and Peezy. Five years ago, he supplied a relatively unknown Grizzley with “First Day Out.” Complete with a Meek Mill-assisted remix, the song marched to quadruple platinum and brought attention back to The D. The producer and rapper doubled up on that chemistry for 2017’s “From The D To The A,” a twice platinum collaboration with Yachty.

Helluva cultivated sounds for the city’s new class, applying his 20-plus years of experience to molding each rapper into a standout artist. “I like to listen to somebody and get to know them as a person,” he shares. “That’s how the music develops. I make the music match their personality and uniqueness.” As Detroit occupied the spotlight, respected stars from other cities sought out Helluva beats. Jeezyand E-40, reached out, as did Meg, who collaborated with Helluva for two songs from her 2020 gold-certified Suga album, including the platinum lead single “B.I.T.C.H.” Helluva’s impressive catalog now includes over one billion streams and counting.

Helluva‘s journey is far from an overnight success. He has rapped and made music for over 25 years. Despite lacing the Detroit underground with beats since the late 1990s, the producer, born Martin McCurtis struggled to make ends while being the sole provider for his four children who relied on him. After stringing together a modest underground production career, the veteran began to lose hope for making his dream a reality. Stints in jail and relocating his family to Atlanta wore him down, especially as Detroit rappers went to other regions for beats. Refusing to mimic another region’s style, he eventually returned to Michigan. At a personal and professional low point, the producer was tapped to work with Tee Grizzley. “We both started from the bottom,” Helluva says. Together, they made “First Day Out,” a monstrous 2016 single that marked an introduction for a star and an awakening for a city. Helluva’s phone has not stopped ringing since; over a billion have heard his trademark tag. Now, after 4 platinum and 3 gold credits, Helluva returns with music under his name—his first since 2011’s Hell Froze Over. A decade later, that everlasting hometown love and dedication are alive on “No Membership.”

WATCH: Moonchild Sanelly and Trillary Banks Share Empowerment Anthem ‘Cute’

Published

on

Moonchild Sanelly – real name Sanelisiwe Twisha – is gearing up to release her long-awaited second album next month. Phases will be released via Transgressive Records on June 10. Today, she shares the new single “Cute” featuring Trillary Banks.

A straight-up empowerment anthem, Moonchild explains, “The song is about bad boss bitches with big dick energy who look fly while they’re running their shit. We can be cute, so our power might look unthreatening, but don’t be fooled, we’re powerful and we’re here to fuck shit up!”

Trillary adds, “Recording the track was a cool, fun experience. I love the Two Inch Punch production. Meeting Moon in person was also great, we were able to go to a gig, vibe at the studio, do some shopping and discuss visual ideas. What a crazy but cute 24 hours.”

Forming a sonic foundation that veers between Amapiano, Gqom, grime, pop, house and R&B while showcasing her vocal talents on more downtempo songs, Phases’ 19 tracks document the varying chapters of a toxic relationship and subsequent freedom. A double album, the first side is a journey through the relationship with production reflecting those different moods and aspects of her personality; the second side, meanwhile, leads into a clubbier amapiano space.

The tracks on it, she says, are a way of empowering all different types of girls and promoting respect for women: “Over You” finds strength and power in breaking-up with a cheating ex; “Strip Club”, featuring Ghetts, flips the male-led narrative, instead putting the woman in charge. “I want people to relate to the stories I’m telling,” she says. Moonchild Sanelly has become well known for unapologetically spreading her message of female empowerment: “liberation for women, in the bedroom, in the boardroom, knowing your power… I need to be heard by a lot of people”.

Carrying South Africa along with her has long been important for her, too, and it’s something that’s reflected on Phases, as she is joined by two of the country’s most exciting rappers: Blxckie on “ULi” and Sir Trill on “Soyenza”.

Collaboration has been core to Moonchild Sanelly since her award-winning debut album Rabulapha!, having not only dominated the gqom and amapiano scenes in SA but with her international hits and collaborations with Wizkid,Beyonce (featuring on “MY POWER”), Gorillaz (“With Love To An Ex”) and Ghetts (“Mozambique”).

Phases is a highly collaborative record, too, with production and guest features from Sad Night Dynamite, Wesley Joseph, Xavier Thomas (Débruit), TOKiMONSTA, HOLLY and Aramboa.

The album’s title takes on a multitude of meanings: via the range of genres covered across its runtime, the different sounds and styles that it encompasses and the personal journey that Sanelisiwe Twisha has taken to get to this point. But, for Moonchild Sanelly, it’s more literal than that: “I think that, with this album, I’ve managed to piece all the different parts of me together, because I’m known for different things in different parts of the world. I think you get to know me better with Phases – all the different sides of me.”

Spinabenz drops “No More Parties on Sundays” video

Published

on

With an intoxicating flow that will send heads into a spiral, Spinabenz has emerged from the Jacksonville, Florida rap scene poised for stardom with millions of streams and his city on his back. “People might retire in Florida, but nobody wants to retire in Jacksonville,” Spina reflects matter-of-factly on his home city. Growing up the neighborhoods were siloed, and since Jacksonville isn’t much of a gangland territory, most people just kept to their respective corners.

“We were in our own little world & I made music my focus,” Spina says, even working side hustles to pay for his studio time. 2021 was a landmark year, as he dropped his “BeatBox” track, which changed it all. “I got my first million with that one!” he remarks on the streaming success. By the time “Who I Smoke” dropped, it was clear that Spinabenz was playing the long game with his music, as the track and video cracked the 37.5 million mark on YouTube alone. To date, Spinabenz has over 40M streams on Apple Music, 47M on Spotify, and 102M on YouTube.

His dedicated fan base (called Tornados) stays at the ready for what Spina has coming, and he’s just getting warmed up. His two focus tracks dropping in tandem on The Tornado Kidd — “No More Parties On Sundays” and “Country Rap Drill Song” show different dimensions to Spinabenz and his knack for storytelling. “Country Rap Drill Song,” aims to reinvent the wheel, melding genres. “People keep saying I should do Drill, so if I’ma do Drill, I’m going to do it how I want to,” he continues. “And nobody has heard Drill like this.”

His hard work and dedication have culminated in the release of his 20-track album, The Tornado Kidd. “I never dropped a whole album before,” he admits, “so this is gonna be crazy!” The project boasts the consistency that Spina has set forth for nearly a decade, dialing back to when he was a kid stepping into the studio for the very first time. From slick, crooning tracks, to exhilarating Jacksonville-style cuts, and introspective & melody-driven offerings, Spinabenz displays he can truly do it all.

The project also includes this year’s previously released singles, “Murder Talk, Pt. 3” and “Big A$$ Choppa” as well as features from Greenlight, Yungeen Ace, and Woppa wit da Choppa. As Spinabenz ushers in a new era in his career, but also for rap in general, he continues with the same motivation to keep growing and keep evolving with his fans riding beside him. “I’ve been rapping for a long time and I’m here to stay,” he explains. “The Tornado never stops spinning.”
