The Ghana Police Service arrested 29 people on Tuesday after dispersing a violent anti-cost protest in Accra with tear gas. The protest took a turn for the worse when protesters engaged in a violent exchange with police, injuring 12 officers and leading to the arrest of some of the protesters.

Following the incident, many Ghanaians, both inside and outside the country, have come out to condemn the police and protesters’ violent actions.

One video that went viral from the incident showed a police officer beating a handcuffed protester who was clearly not resisting arrest. The video sparked an online outrage, with “Be My Love” singer NY Melody among those quick to condemn the officer’s actions.

The musician later posted a video in which he expressed his disappointment at seeing the video. For him, the police officer was abusing his authority, and slapping someone who was already handcuffed was completely unnecessary.

“We live in a democracy, and in a democracy, we have the right to demonstrate when something bothers us.” The police, also known as “Peace Officers,” are supposed to keep the peace and order no matter what environment they are in.”

Imagine what would have happened if the protesters had retaliated in response to the slap. The cops should have known better; they should have some emotional intelligence. “Police brutality is slapping someone already in cuffs who isn’t resisting arrest.” he said.

Hope the officer responsible for the assault is dealt with. This is soo unprofessional and the police always misuse their powers as law enforcement

The police officer was wrong , our law enforcement needs constant training and real time surveillance system to track their actions . They can sometimes do worse in the line of duty. NY Melody thanks for using your platform to highlight this wrongful act.
