John PanstilFebruary is often described as the month of love but it seems some African sportsmen are not having any of it! Right on the heels of the arrest of South African Olympian, Oscar Pistorius  for the murder of his girlfriend on valentine’s Day, reports suggest that Ghanaian defender John Pantsil has been arrested by the East Legon Police in Accra on allegation of assaulting his wife on Friday.  The Hapoel Tel Aviv player was said to have punched her in the upper eyelid and the wife was reported to be unconscious and at the Legon hospital. The Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey confirmed to Citi News in an interview that Black Stars defender John Paintsil is in police custody for assaulting his wife. It is not clear the cause of the misunderstanding as the Police described the incident as domestic quarrel. According to DSP Freeman Tettey, the police detained John Panstil for causing harm to his wife because he believed she had stolen and amount of money from him. “This is far from assault. It’s a clear case of causing harm to a fellow human being. Surely, he (John Pantsil) will be taken to court. We need to do proper investigation. Let us not jump the gun. Currently he has been detained.” he indicated. According to an eyewitness who is also a house help in the neighborhood, he heard noise from John Pantsil’s house but wasn’t sure of what was happening. “I heard the noise but did not know what was happening so I went there to check and met John Paintsil with the wife arguing over an alleged $20,000 stolen, and the wife insisted she has no money in her possession. He was beating the wife whiles she was bleeding. So the lady decided to run from the house… she jumped to the next house but John Paintsil did not stop and went to the next house where the wife jumped to, to beat her. “John Paintsil went to the house to insult the landlord where his wife escaped to. I (eyewitness) even asked him to stop but he never listened but continued to beat her. The wife collapsed so we rushed her to the hospital. After that the police arrived to arrest John Paintsil,” he narrated.

Meanwhile, his wife, Mrs. Richlove Paintsil has denied the assault and said John Paintsil never assaulted her but they just had a little misunderstanding. She did not go into details on what happened, except to warn the interviewer to respect her right to privacy. Richlove Paintsil also cautioned against the publishing or airing of the incident. According to Mrs. Panstil, the police account must not be taken seriously as she was heading to the Legon Police Station where her husband had been held to secure his release. Black Stars deputy captain John Paintsil has since been granted bail of Gh 40,000 by the Legon police following the amicable settlement of a domestic incident involving his wife Richlove.
