DAVE GUY (The Roots, Dap-Kings) Shares New Single ft Clairo

Dave Guy announces his debut album Ruby set for release on September 20th via Big Crown Records. Throughout the album’s 12 tracks, he explores New York Jazz and pushes the boundaries of the genre by incorporating shades of hip hop and soul, making it both unique and modern. Guy’s unmistakable trumpet playing,  distinct tone and sensibility, set him apart from his peers. This is what you get when someone hones their talent for years while rubbing elbows with the best of the best. He’s recorded on some of present day’s most iconic funk, soul and pop albums, and currently performs with The Roots live and on The Tonight Show. Now, Dave is ready to step straight to the front with a deserved light shining directly on him and his well-defined sound.

Today, Guy also shares the album’s lead single, “7th Heaven,” an anthemic tune with thundering drums, and dancing piano that Dave’s horn lines soar over. The ethereal vocals from Claire Cottrill (Clairo) balances the music and makes for an instant classic. The track is one of the first that Guy along with friends and longtime collaborators Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss recorded in the studio.

“It has a groove and is more in line with what the guys and I are known for with Menahan Street Band, but it is also in-your-face and catchy,” notes Guy. “It’s a bit of an ode to Tijuana Brass too, a Herb Alpert-esque track with a tight horn line and has that energy that pops.”

Raised in NYC’s East Village, Dave was surrounded by hip-hop and the hustle that defined the city in the ’90s. In those formative days, he and his playing were influenced by jazz greats like Donald Byrd and Hugh Masekela but also by the Native Tongue sounds of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. His time at LaGuardia Performing Arts High School furthered this path. Dave remembers sharing playing time with Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels and drumming powerhouse Homer Steinweiss. “Being in the All-City Jazz Big Band, I would see them rehearsing all the time,” Dave recalls. “They were already doing things with the Dap-Kings back then—which was crazy.” It was here that Dave’s voice as a player began to take shape and continued to be refined through his studies at the Manhattan School of Music and The New School, and then playing with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band, The Sugarman 3 and more and lending his playing to records from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Pharell, The, Lee Fields, Al Green, and many others.

As fate would have it, a classic case of “when one door shuts, another opens” was really what got the ball rolling on the album. “I never wanted to force my own project,” Dave explains. “There was always a lot going on between things—the timing was never right.” But then, The Tonight Show had to pause during the 2023 Writers’ Strike and, unexpectedly, there was a free moment. Within days Dave started recording at NYC’s fabled Diamond Mine studio with Steinweiss and Movshon. What started out as just looking to make music and create, quickly took shape and direction and they ended up laying down something wildly special and authentic. An album of songs that capture different moods and an invitation into the world as Dave Guy sees it and feels it.

Ruby is a record that mixes Dave Guy’s musical influences with the energies of the city that raised him. It also features stunning cover art by renowned NYC-based multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams. Pre-save / pre-order Ruby here: https://bigcrownrecords.com/store/ruby.

KIKI CELINE LEARNS FROM OLD LOVE ON NEW SONG

Love being the greatest emotion has never been an overstatement. However, when talking about what it means to love and be loved, we often forget that sometimes the way someone loves us can change. When that happens, we are left with nothing but the memories of how we were loved by that person.

Audio link: https://tiememusicdistro.lnk.to/OldLove

On her first single of the year 2024, Ghanaian singer KiKi Celine continues her beautiful run from 2023 as she pours out her heart and emotions on her new song titled “Old Love.”

The song cements Celine’s position as one of the best vocalists around and puts her songwriting abilities on full display. The song is reminiscent of early 2000s R&B classics we grew up on, with KiKi Celine’s bounce. Produced by Insvne Auggie, the song takes listeners on a journey of love gone wrong, pain, and reliving the few good times spent with a significant other.

If Celine’s writing or vocals were ever in doubt, “Old Love” will clear any doubts there are about the singer’s artistry. With a burgeoning R&B scene in Ghana and West and East Africa, Celine enters the conversation with this record. The melodies, delivery, and overall storytelling are remarkable and are sure to leave listeners in their “feels.”

Love teaches us a lot about others and ourselves that we do not know until we experience being loved by them. The song is an appreciation of how it feels to be loved while calling out people who introduce you to an experience they can never keep up with. When all is said and done, we will need more than just flowers and a touch of old love.

R&B music is alive, and KiKi Celine is determined to be one of the names synonymous with the genre whenever conversations about the genre come up.

Victony Tells Apple Music What Inspired His New Album, ‘Stubborn’

Looking back at everything I’ve been through – my come-up story and how I’ve defied the odds. I’ve stayed true to myself and kept my eyes on the goal all along. Nothing else has influenced by decisions.

Victony Tells Apple Music About His Career Trajectory So Far

Sometimes I look back and I’m like “Damn, you’ve really come a long way.” Going from the era of doing covers to my first EP. At the time I released my first EP, it felt like I blew. Then “Holy Father” came and I blew again. Then the ‘Outlaw’ EP came and I blew up even more. And now it’s ‘Stubborn.’ It definitely feels like I have three lives in such a short span, but overall I’m very excited for everything that’s to come.

Victony Tells Apple Music about the Visuals for ‘Stubborn’

It was definitely intentional. Once you see a knight, you know it’s war. Metaphorically, I feel like to get to this point, I’ve fought so many battles. Especially being in Nigeria, coming from where I’m coming from. I was born in Lagos; I’ve lived here all my life. I’ll tell you for free, it’s not the most inspiring or encouraging for any career path that you choose. Healing through all that, and being able to make it here as an artist, and having the opportunity to now inspire people. It was definitely intentional that I came up with the look and it just felt very organic to put the coif on and to demonstrate my artistry.

Victony Tells Apple Music About His Song, “Anita”

“Anita” is actually one of my favourite songs. Shout out to [the producer] P2J—I feel like P2J gave me masterclass production on that one. And I had to come through with my own delivery as well. It’s a really special record. We made it in London. I had a couple of sessions with P2J. We made an EP in a night. We made five songs and “Anita” was one of them. It was a really crazy experience. I cannot forget that night.

Victony Tells Apple Music About Working With KTIZO

“Oshaprapra” kind of embodies what the album is about. That’s a really special record. It was produced by KTIZO, who made “Jolene” on the ‘Outlaw’ EP. That’s a producer that I work with and they get me for real. Most of the songs that embody the theme of the album, I worked on with KTIZO. Their studio is a ten-minute drive from my house, so every time I’m really thinking about life and the only way to express it is through my music. I just drive to the studio and be like “Houdini, let’s make something happen.

Victony Tells Apple Music About Working With SAINt JHN

SAINt JHN is in my top five artists of all time. He’s someone I really look up to so you can imagine how much that session meant to me. Being in the same room as SAINt JHN and watching him create, learning from him. That was a very interesting record.

Victony Tells Apple Music About Exploring Different Musical Styles on ’Stubborn’

I wanted my fans to get a feel of all sides of Victony on this album. This is my debut album and my first opportunity for me to introduce myself to my fans properly. Let them know what I’m capable of. A lot of people joined the train around the time that I released the Outlaw EP. A small percentage of my fans know me from the “SMS” time into the ‘Saturn’ EP. This is where I like to introduce myself and say, “This is Victony.”

Victony Tells Apple Music About How His Creative Versatility Impacts His Music

Even outside music, I just love to try out different things. At some point I was in a dance group. At some point I tried acting. Even with some of the teasers I put out, I do acting here and there. So I try to incorporate that in my music as well, so I listen to all kinds of music. Fuse elements from different genres and try to make something beautiful. That’s something I really did during the process of making this album. I was in the learning phase and I just tried to apply all that I have learned.
