Ghana’s Gospel industry is full of hypocrisy – Patience Nyarko

Ghanaian gospel singer, Patience Nyarko has taken to social media to lambast her fellow gospel musicians and industry players who are speaking against Nathaniel Bassey’s recent advice to Ghanaian gospel musicians.

The Nigerian gospel music star, while ministering at the Jesus Encounter Concert held at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 2,2023, stated that Ghanaian gospel musicians should try their best to do more songs in English in order to reach wider audiences across the world.

While acknowledging the anointing on Ghanaian gospel artists, the ‘Jesus Iyee’ hitmaker voiced worry over their constant singing in local dialects which limit their global visibility.

However, this didn’t sit well with a number of Ghanaians especially some gospel singers and stakeholders, with a majority of them disagreeing with the ‘Jesus Iyee’ hitmaker. Some gospel singers including Celestine Donkor, have boldly  shared their stance on the matter, vehemently disagreeing with the Nigerian musician appeal.

Speaking on the issue in a Facebook live session on Friday, December 8, 2023, Patience Nyarko stated that the gospel music fraternity is full of hypocrisy.

According to the ‘Obi Nyanime’ crooner, she spoke about this issue some four years ago, detailing how she came out to encourage her colleagues Ghanaian musicians to focus on doing songs in their preferred languages, as their calling is not about language. Unfortunately, she was misunderstood and had some Ghanaians including ace radio and television broadcaster, Abeiku, Santana, backlashing her  for her comments.

”What is happening? What is going on in the Ghanaian gospel music industry? I was fighting this issue in 2019, where I stated that the calling of Gospel musicians by God is not a matter of language but about how well one can do in his or her field. This is what I came out to say, but unfortunately some Ghanaians  including Abeiku Santana came out to say a whole lot of negative things about me.

”I was expecting him (Abeiku Santana) to have done better, but he came out to say things I can’t even say to him or his kid. So why are you guys now fighting Nathaniel Bassey? Don’t you agree with him now? Have you seen that you guys are hypocrites? Have you seen what God is doing to you? You have been disgraced,” she said

Patience further questioned the whereabouts of her fellow Ghanaian gospel musicians when she was addressing the same  issue in 2019.

”We haven’t seen anything yet. Where were you when I was fighting this issue? I’m asking you….or you guys had travelled that time. What has Nathaniel done? He’s realized that is what you guys want and so he’s offered it to you. Even Nigerians don’t listen to your English songs” she added.
