Award-winning Ghanaian gospel singer and songwriter, Celestine Donkor has rendered an unqualified apology to all and sundry who find her recent statement about Nathaniel Bassey’s advice to Ghanaian gospel singers in bad taste.

It will be recalled that the ‘Only You’ hitmaker, during a discussion on Joy FM’s X (formerly) spaces with Kwame Dadzie on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, asserted that a sense of guilt motivated her fellow Nigerian gospel musician, Nathaniel Bassey’s recent advice to Ghanaian gospel musicians. During his performance at the Jesus Encounter Concert held at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 2, 2023, the ‘Jesus Iyee’ singer stated that Ghanaian gospel musicians should try their best to do more songs in English in order to reach wider audiences across the world.

While acknowledging the anointing on Ghanaian gospel artists, Nathaniel Bassey voiced worry over their constant singing in local dialects which limit their global visibility.

Addressing the comment, Celestine Donkor claimed that the appeal was made out of guilt, adding that her colleague made that remark because most Nigerian artistes are given more premium in Ghana than the Ghanaian artistes.

“For me I think this prophecy was inspired by guilt. It was inspired by guilt because when you host a concert in somebody’s country, you put only two of their celebrated artists on their concert. And because you are feeling guilty about the whole thing clashing with some concerts that are already going on, you prophesy that our time will come,” she said.
