Laugh out loud! Sign language translator at Nelson Mandela memorial service was a fake?

Published

on

Fake-Sign-Language-Nelson-MandelaAccording to DailyMail; South Africa’s deaf federation has confirmed that an interpreter using sign language during the Mandela memorial was a ‘fake’. The man, who signed for a portion of the televised event at  Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium was simply making up his own signs, according to the Deaf Federation of South Africa. The unidentified man seen around the world on television next to leaders like U.S. President Barack Obama ‘was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,’ said Bruno Druchen, the federation’s national director. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country’s 11 official languages, according to the federation. South African parliament member Wilma Newhoudt-Druchen, a member of the ruling party who is deaf and who is married to Druchen, also said the man communicated nothing with his hand and arm movements. Nicole Du Toit, an official sign language interpreter who also watched the broadcast, said in a telephone interview that the man on stage purporting to sign was an embarrassment. ‘It was horrible, an absolute circus, really, really bad,’ she said. ‘Only he can understand those gestures.’ Braam Jordaan, a deaf South African and board member of the World Deaf Federation, said he believes the interpreter was making up signs as he went along. ‘The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying’, Mr Jordaan told the SBS news website.

‘I was really upset and humiliated’, he told the SBS news website, ‘He made up his own signs. ‘What happened at the memorial service is truly disgraceful thing to see – it should not happen at all. ‘What happened today will be forever aligned with Nelson Mandela & Deaf Community, thanks to this fake interpreter.’ The Limping Chicken, a leading UK news blog for the deaf, commented: ‘The ‘interpreter’ signed in a way I’ve never seen before, a strange repetitive rhythm to his movements – his signs appearing to come in threes or fours, occasionally swinging his shoulders, as if he was signing along with an intermittent beat. ‘Most puzzlingly, the structure of his hand and body movements didn’t seem to change no matter what the speaker was saying.’ According to tweeter @braamjordaan, ‘He also ‘interpreted’ at the ANC elective conference in Mangaung last December. It is as if he came back with vengeance!’ Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter with DeafSA, said authorities were trying to track the man down. She said: ‘There was zero percent accuracy. He couldn’t even get the basics right. He couldn’t even say thank you. ‘You’re supposed to indicate with your facial expressions, even if it’s not an exact sign. He didn’t indicate that (booing of Jacob Zuma) at all. It just passed him by. ‘Nobody knows who he is. Even at this hour we still don’t have his name.’ Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa’s government said it was preparing a statement. Jackson Mthembu, spokesman for the governing African National Congress party, declined to comment. ‘Government will be able to assist you,’ Mthembu said.

The premiere of the most anticipated Ghanaian crime action thriller; The Agency, postponed to December 2

Published

The Agency3

We wish to officially announce that Ghana’s most anticipated crime action thriller, The Agency, initially scheduled to premiere on October 1, 2022, has been postponed to December 2, 2022.

This difficult decision became necessary due to some challenges, including a planned renovation by Silverbird Cinemas, commencing two days after the premiere of The Agency movie and lasting about a week. Meaning that subsequent showings of The Agency in the cinema would have to be suspended for the entire duration of the renovation. From a business perspective, this is not prudent as a break in screening would water down the impact we anticipate audience reviews after the premiere will make, while potentially affecting revenue as well. Hence, the need to postpone to a more suitable date.

In considering suitable dates, we had to ensure that the new date was not set too close to or on the same day as any major local or international event and or movie releases. This is also important because it can adversely affect our premiere. After extensive consultations and careful consideration, it became clear that The Agency should premiere in December.

Coincidentally, the National Film Authority called on Cine-God Studios to discuss the Ghana Cinema Week slated for December 2022. The ten (10) day event seeks to revive the Ghanaian cinema culture by encouraging Ghanaians to watch Ghanaian films at various venues across the country. By supporting and participating in this initiative, we get a golden opportunity to access more screens; which means we get to bring the The Agency movie closer to more film lovers across Ghana faster than we initially scheduled.

In all, we believe that this postponement provides an opportunity for us to entertain film lovers without compromising on returns for our investor; a win-win situation.

The Agency is a crime-action thriller movie which tells the story of a very powerful government security agency, which was formed to handle the government’s top-secret operations but which gets corrupted under the leadership of a highly connected female government appointee who uses the agency for back-door business dealings, hence, causing the emergence of a group of highly skilled individuals to embark on a self-sanctioned perilous mission to end the corruption and abuse. It was Executive produced by Amin Ramart and directed by Abu Iddris.

We therefore take the opportunity to apologize for any inconveniences caused and encourage the public to turn out in their numbers on December 2, 2022 for the premiere at Silverbird Cinemas (Accra Mall and West Hills mall) and subsequent showings at venues near them.
