Star African Footballer to Watch: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

After a hiatus in the major leagues around Europe finally the Premier League returns on the heels of the Spanish La Liga leading the charge a week earlier.  Africa’s number one sports broadcaster SuperSport has assured viewers about 350 live games on DStv and GOtv as the leagues close. This weekend fans can look forward to seeing one of Africa’s top footballing sons, Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, in action as the Premier League returns this midweek.

Aubameyang has been one of the players most prevalent in the news during lockdown, with his future at Arsenal very much up in the air. The 30-year-old (he turns 31 on Thursday 18 June) will see his current contract at the Gunners run out in just over a year’s time, and he has thus far failed to agree a new deal.

This has prompted speculation that he will be sold by the Premier League club once the 2019-20 season is completed, allowing them to at least make back some of the £56million they paid Borussia Dortmund back in early 2018 and preventing his departure on a free transfer in 2021.

‘Auba’ has been a brilliant performer for Arsenal  he has netted 17 goals in the Premier League this season (only Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy has scored more) and his overall return of 61 strikes from 97 Gunners appearances across all competitions is world class but question marks over his future are a worry for the club.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour is hoping that Mikel Arteta’s team can get off to a flyer in their Premier League restart starting with a tough clash away to Manchester City on Wednesday evening and push for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. This could convince Aubameyang to pen a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

“If they [Arsenal] can come back and hit the ground running and get a good start to the season, obviously the Man City game is going to be very important, if they can get anything out of that game that will give them a lot of confidence going forward,” said Parlour.

“Champions League football is so important for a lot of players these days so Aubameyang, if they can squeeze in there, might sign a new contract, I don’t know. If they don’t, then he might be on his way and suddenly you’ve got to replace a striker who scores all your goals.”

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can see Aubameyang in action twice in the coming days, with Arsenal taking on Manchester City on Wednesday 17 June and Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 20 June.
