Watch: 12 million Ghanaians could be exposed to #covid_19 if extra precautions are not taken- Virologist
A virologist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Michael Owusu, has estimated that close to 40% of Ghana’s population, that is 12 million people could become exposed to the deadly coronavirus within the next couple of months if extra care is not taken.
According to Dr Owusu, our social structure makes us vulnerable to the spread of the disease.
“If you look at the infectivity of the virus, and the fact that as we speak now, because of our social structure, we still have some form of mingling ongoing…we should expect that close to 40% of people will be exposed in the next one month or two if the trend goes on as it is going because the virus spreads…very fast,” Dr Owusu told Evans Mensah, host of PM Express on JoyNews on Monday.
So far, Ghana has recorded 27 cases of the deadly novel virus with two deaths.
While the President, Nana Akufo-Addo has placed a ban on all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and religious activities, such as services in churches and mosques for the next four (4) weeks, social-distancing is yet to be paid heed to by a lot of Ghanaians.
