Former captain of Ghana’s national football team, Asamoah Gyan has publicly announced his decision to resign from the New Patriotic Party in order to dedicate himself to humanitarian efforts.

In a statement shared on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer expressed that his political affiliation has not served the best interests of the nation’s youth. He intends to withdraw from active political involvement and concentrate on empowering Ghanaian youth through initiatives led by the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

In February 2024, shortly after Gyan was seen at the campaign launch for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Presidential Candidate and Vice President, he was appointed as the chairman of Bawumia’s Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee.

Last month, he participated in a campaign walk alongside the vice president in Akropong, located in the Eastern Region. However, in his recent statement, the 38-year-old Gyan acknowledged that his previous actions were not in the best interest of Ghana’s youth and declared his intention to refrain from partisan activities in the future.

“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth I am not affiliated to any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the December 7 elections. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you,” Gyan posted alongside the statement.
