2021 In Review: The biggest celebrity controversies of the year

Already the year 2021 is coming to an end, and what a year it has been! From so many celebrity arrests and feuds, here’s a look at the year that was 2021.

While many argue that celebrities get free passes when they break the law, this year was the worst for some entertainment personalities who were caught in the grip of the Ghana Police Service and the law for committing various offenses.

2021 witnessed the arrest and imprisonment of key celebrities who fans earlier taught were ‘untouchable’ and these made headlines as the biggest controversies of the year.

  1. Shatta Wale’s Fake Kidnap and Arrest

37-year-old dancehall singer, Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly known as Shatta Wale, spent his birthday month behind bars.

The Dancehall King was on October 19 arrested over a death threat claim which was later found out to be fake.

The award-winning artiste spent a week at the Ankaful Prison for a gunshot prank and was later granted bail to the tune of GH¢100,000 together with three of his accomplices.

Announcing his arrest in a tweet, the Ghana Police Service wrote: “He has been arrested to assist the police in investigations for his alleged involvement in the creation and circulation of information intended to cause fear and panic.”

2. Rosemond Brown’s Sentencing

In April 2021, an Accra Circuit Court sentenced actress and social media influencer, Rosemond Alade Brown, professionally known as Akuapem Poloo to a 90-day jail term for the publication of obscene photos of herself and her son.
The actress in June 2020 shared naked photos of herself and her then 7-year-old boy to mark his birthday. She was arrested in connection to the images,
Poloo was granted bail on April 27 by the Criminal Court 2 Division of the High Court. Her lawyer, Andrew Vortia described the 90-day sentencing as harsh.
Fast forward to December 1, 2021, an Accra High Court dismissed her appeal and directed her to continue serving the 90day jail term which was again squashed after she paid a court fine of 12,000gh cedis.

3. MEDIKAL’S PRISON EXPERIENCE

Rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, stage name, Medikal, is among the list of celebrities who spent part of their year in prison custody.
An Accra Circuit court on Friday, October 22 remanded him to 5-day imprisonment and charged him with the unlawful display of arms and ammunition to which he pleaded not guilty
His court case was keenly followed by the general public as he spent some days in Ankaful prison, days after the arrest of Shatta Wale.
He was however granted bail to the tune of GH¢100,000 and is expected to reappear before the court on January 25, 2022.

4. Bulldog’s NIB Arrest

Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Lawrence Nana Asiamah popularly known as Bulldog was also arrested this year for threatening the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
While making a submission on United Showbiz hosted by actress Nana Ama McBrown on January 9, 2021, he stated that President Akufo-Addo will not complete his 4-year-term in office if aggrieved customers of the firm do not get their locked-up funds.
“We’ll get our monies back else Nana Addo will run; he won’t finish his 4 years. I’m telling you. He won’t finish his 4 years,” Bulldog was quoted to have said.
Bulldog’s threat saw his arrest by the National Investigation Bureau. Reports indicate that he was granted bail three days after his arrest.

5. FUNNY FACE’S RELAPSES, SUICIDE ATTEMPTS, AND ARREST

In the case of  Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng, professionally known as Funny Face, he appeared before the court in two instances.
It has been a rough year for the Children’s President’ who has been moving from the Psychiatric Hospital to courtrooms over some utterances made on social media.
On February 8, the Millennium Police Command arrested Funny for unlawfully firing a gun.
In a police statement, the actor was reported to have been involved in an altercation with a drinking pub owner. He fired a pump-action gun during a misunderstanding at Kasoa.
Fast-forward to October 18, 2021, Funny was once again caught in the grip of the law. In a viral video, he was heard threatening the lives of some people with death.
He was picked up by the police for threatening to kill the mother of his children known as Vanessa.
The actor who threatened to take his own life in a video on social media was ordered by the court to undergo psychiatric treatment and ordered to stay off social media for some time.

6. EFIA ODO #FixTheCountry Campaign and Arrest

Ghanaian actress Efia Odo decided to publicly fight for citizens by participating in the #FixTheCountry that took over the nation earlier this year and ended receiving death threats, spending a day in police custody as well taking a long break from social media. Efia and 10 other leaders of the #FixTheCountry campaign were been arrested by the police on Friday June 25 after a court hearing on whether or not they should be allowed to organize their demonstration.

7. Ohemaa Jackie’s Fraud Case

Gospel musician, Jacklin Sarfo Gyamfua, popularly known as Ohemaa Jackie was arrested for defrauding a trader of 21,000 Euros under the pretext of securing her two Italian passports and Resident Identity Cards
On September 8, Ohemaa Jackie was arrested by the police for defrauding by false pretenses and forgery of official documents. Also, a search conducted in her home saw two forged Italian passports and two Resident ID Cards.
She was granted bail of GH¢150,000, however, an Accra Circuit Court in November issued a bench warrant for the singer’s arrest after failing to reappear before the court.

8. Shatta Wale and Samini’s feud

Dancehall musicians, Shatta Wale and Samini resurrected an old feud when they poked each other on Twitter.
Samini started the “war when he tweeted that Shatta was only successful because he had help from a businessman, Nana Appiah Mensah well known as NAM1.
He wrote: “The living fool measures the success of a man by the size of a swimming pool. living proof of the fact that depths of minds differ.A beneficiary always feels wisest until the benefactor becomes woke. Remember I did it all by myself without a “Nam1″ and no one is my Don.”
Shatta didn’t let Samini’s slide he replied: “You do song about girls and i do song about money, nooorr you bore deh dis somebodys fada NAM1 .. I start buying houses before I met NAM1, you start buying credit as mtn sign you. That was your fucken property maaafaka.”
In an interview with the United Showbiz, Shatta Wale revealed that the feud between him and Samini had no backing. He explained that he realized that the industry is like street racing and you have to steer someone off the road to take over.
The two were caught in a series of gabs directed at each other in Twitter posts throughout the year.

9. Afia Schwarzenegger and Ayisha Modi’s Beef

Shots were fired in an unbearable social media rant of name-calling between Ayisha Modi and Afia Schwarzenegger. The insults degenerated into something serious with interesting revelations.
Ayisha made known how Afia Schwarzenneger used her adopted daughter to solicit money from people. She alleged that Afia was a ‘betweener’ for Tracey Boakye and Adonko Boss, Dr. Kweko Oteng.
Ayisha had a lot to say about Afia which includes, her disloyalty, blackmail, love for black magic, and a host of other revelations.
According to Afia Schwarzenegger, Ayisha is a broke woman who can’t pay her rent in the United States and has to resort to menial jobs to survive.

10. Amerado and Obibini’s  Lyrical Battle

Ghanaian rappers Amerado and Obibini were locked in a lyrical duel following a freestyle by Amerado on Tim Westwood’s show.
A line in Amerado’s freestyle took a swipe at somebody who he claims is the rap ‘wudinii’ which means ‘murderer of rap’.
When people heard the rap they concluded Amerado took a jab at Obibini because he is the one that goes by that moniker.
Obibini revealed Amerado was not worth the time if he had to reply to him with a diss song. Amerado called him a bluff in an interview with MzGee on TV3, and dared him to hit the studio if he felt disrespected by his ‘wudinii jab in his freestyle.
When fans waited patiently, Obibini hit back with ‘Deceased’ which got fans talking but it didn’t end there when barely four hours after Obibini’s release Amerado also replied with ‘The Throne’ to answer Obibini. Obibini released the final diss track titled ‘Carcass’.

10. Joyce Blessing’s alleged infidelity

In the last couple of days, gospel musician Joyce Blessing has become a topic for discussion for what no one expected, infidelity

The report came after the couple suffered a setback in their marriage in May 2020 over infidelity claims.

9. Bongo Ideas ‘NEXT TV STAR’ embarrassing audition

It was in November when the case of Journalist Albert took over social, television, and radio platforms for getting a scolding of his life when he showed up to audition for ‘The Next TV Star’.
The blogger had danced to the tune of his music for trolling celebrities including the judges he stood before.
The incident caused a lot of reactions on social media, with some people condemning the blogger for being a bully, while others scolded Nana Aba Anamoah, Serwaa Amihere and Bridget Otoo on their approach in handling the young man.
After the revelation of who the young man was, lots of people brought out screenshots of the same guy saying odious things about some persons including Efia Odo, Caroline Sampson, Lydia Forson among others.

Although he publicly apologized later, Blogger Bongo lost his job with GhBase.com and was appointed by EIB to lead their anti-bully campaign which he later turned down.

10. Moesha’s Repentance

A few weeks after her lavish birthday party, Moesha Boduong shocked Ghanaians with her repentance story and for weeks was the talk of the town. 

After sharing her testimony and repenting her sins in Church, the once “slay queen” seemingly turned over a new leaf.

In videos that went viral, Moesha was heard sharing some details about her past sinful life and encouraging people to repent and find God too.

“I’m sorry Ghana. I’m sorry to all the girls I introduced to men. May God forgive me for my sins,” she’s heard saying in the video.

Weeks later, Ayisha Modi accused Moe’s new church of polluting her mind to steal her properties. These claims were denied by the church who swore Moesha was with her family and being taken care of. Little had been heard or seen of Moesha since August 2021.
